Nine Areas of Work
Have you ever been curious about the meaning behind our logo? The nine rays of the abstract sun represent of the nine areas of work, and therapy types, that our team is committed to as a practice. Over E I G H T years of deep human connection have helped us determine what the different types of therapy are that we’re most focused on. If you find yourself within any of these nine rays, we may be an ideal fit as a practice for you. We also use the term “work” intentionally - because therapy is hard work. Because of this reality, we want our clients to be intentional about who they work with, and when they do their therapeutic “heavy lifting”.
Therapy should fit into your existing life, and serve as a supplement, rather than a source of further chaos or conflict. Consider this a modern version of our vision and mission as a practice. The nine areas of work are:
Urban Professionals
Type A’s
Trauma-Informed Work
Space Between
Sexual Health & Wellness
Modern Relationships + Neurodiverse Couples
LGBTQIA+ Affirmation + Competency
Cuspers
Creatives
We invite you to explore these nine areas of work in depth. For more information, you can visit our “Know This” page and our “Frequently Asked Questions” page.
Urban Professionals
This therapy type allows Space Between Counseling Services therapists to work with modern professionals in Baltimore City + beyond. We know that therapeutic services from 9-5 during the workweek may not be an option for everyone, so we offer early morning (7 am sessions), evening (until 8 pm), and weekend appointments to accommodate varying schedules.
Our team of 9 therapists is comprised of clinicians with unique specializations who offer appointments via telehealth sessions in the State of Maryland. Our therapists are based in Baltimore City - Midtown Mt. Vernon (21201).
We intentionally operate our offices in Baltimore City because we firmly believe in investing in the communities in which we live, work and play.
Type A’s
At Space Between Counseling Services, we recognize the strengths and setbacks held by self-proclaimed “Type A’s”. While being highly structured, or perhaps inflexible, may be serving in professional settings, it often comes with a relational price. These individuals may be overly motivated, overly scheduled, and overly stimulated. They could be highly focused on performance or perfection.
They possibly could be self-led and independent, due to the need to exist that way as children, or suppression of their younger parts of self. These individuals may find comfort in certainty as opposed to uncertainty. Some individuals may refer to themselves as a “geek” or “nerd”.
Alternatively, these clients may have been formally diagnosed by a medical professional with ASD, or have self-identified as neurodiverse or neurodivergent. We aim to help these individuals to learn how to move through rigidity into the structured flow using this therapy type.
Trauma work
All clinicians at Space Between Counseling Services practice through a trauma-informed lens, so with this therapy type, we are able to approach and understand symptoms of trauma with empathy and knowledge. Trauma comes in many forms and is not always a single, identifiable incident.
For some, trauma could have been a way of life for a period of time. For some, trauma is an intergenerational unspoken burden that’s yet to be unearthed. Our goal is to help our clients explore, understand and attempt to heal from their trauma.
Space Between
YELLOW or Grey Areas
There’s deeper meaning and intention behind our company name. We named our counseling practice Space Between Counseling Services because we all need to have a peaceful, safe place to pause and reflect in the midst of our busy lives.
The times of transition, the moments between action and reaction, the distance that might be growing between you and your inner peace and/or maybe you and your partner… are the spaces between that are calling out for your attention.
Life is often structured in the black + white areas or the areas of certainty + uncertainty.
In our office with this therapy type, we name the grey (or yellow), sit in that space with you, and help you to develop your own shades of “color” for more freedom, purpose, and deeper relational spaces to hold in the now and for your future selves.
Sexual health + wellness
We are a sex-positive community of clinicians who are aware and affirming of sexual diversity, including polyamory, consensual non-monogamy (CNM), kink, BDSM, alt-sex communities, and other sexual identities.
This therapy type allows us to help clients cultivate a fulfilling sex life not only with their partner(s) but also with themselves. Space Between Counseling Services also offers Sex Therapy.
Sex Therapy can assist you in deepening your levels of intimacy, creating a sexual space or framework, treating sexual issues such as dyspareunia, anorgasmia, or erectile dysfunction, and addressing concerns related to sexual arousal and desire. Our team specializes in female sexual health, navigating asexuality within relationships, sex therapy for couples, and sex therapy for individuals exploring/developing their gender identity. We practice from a feminist approach - which means we will focus on cultivating the kind of sex you want - rather than the type of sex you think you should be having. The topic of sex and sexuality can be challenging and overwhelming for people to talk about. At Space Between Counseling Services, your therapist will offer you a nonjudgmental and empathetic approach as you explore sexual topics in a safe space at your own pace.
Modern relationships + Neurodiverse Couples
Space Between Counseling Services is a relationally-focused practice. This is apparent not only in our work with couples & families but in our work with individuals as well.
Esther Perel once stated, “The quality of your life ultimately depends on the quality of your relationships . . . which are basically a reflection of your sense of decency, your ability to think of others, your generosity.” We are all in relationships with others, whether those relationships are romantic, intimate, friendships, or therapeutic. As a practice, we take a realistic approach to working with modern couples who are juggling the demands of work, school, family, friends, and other obligations, so we offer early morning, evening, and weekend appointments to accommodate varying schedules.
This therapy type allows us to embrace working with couples of varying sexual orientations and relationship structures. Our team of couples therapists are LGBTQIA+ informed and are affirming sexual diversity, including polyamory, consensual non-monogamy (CNM), kink, BDSM, and alt-sex communities.
Space Between Counseling Services also specializes in a therapy type known as neurodiverse couples work, which is comprised of one neurotypical partner and a neurodiverse partner. Neurodivergence includes autism, Asperger's syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, epilepsy, hyperlexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette syndrome (TS).
Intimate relationships can be difficult for anyone to navigate. Coupleship is especially challenging when partners have differing perspectives, opposing communication styles, and/or unique skill sets that sometimes misalign. Our practice works with clients to strengthen the relationships that matter most to them, which ultimately impacts their quality of life overall.
LGBTQIA+ affirmation & Competency
At Space Between Counseling Services, you can expect to work with a therapist that not only is queer-affirming but also LGBTQIA+ competent and informed. This value remains central to the spirit of Space Between Counseling Services, as all members of our collective either identify within the LGBTQIA+ community or identify as allies. Collectively, we specialize in LGBTQIA+ related concerns and sexual health concerns. With this therapy type, we recognize that sexual diversity is more than sexual orientation. This includes our sexual and relationship structures, orientations, preferences, and practices.
All people deserve to meet with a therapist who understands and affirms their identity and sexual practices without unnecessarily making that a focus of treatment if a client is not under distress related to their gender identity or romantic orientation. Space Between Counseling Services is committed to serving as a holding space for all clients free from homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.
cuspers
We specialize in a therapy type that allows us to work with clients who live “on the cusp” of different areas of life. First, let us define “cuspers”… While the term “cusper” traditionally refers to “a person born near the end of one generation and the beginning of another”, we have stretched that definition.
These clients may feel like they live in between two worlds. Often we find ourselves working with clients who describe the unique struggles that come with straddling differing worlds, whether those concerns be relational, work-related, a family of origin related, or something else.
Creatives
We specialize in a therapy type that works with creative humans, such as artists, musicians, graphic designers, small business owners, visionaries, and more. These individuals may be particularly gifted in the arts, music, crafting, re-purposing, thrifting, designing, and re-structuring areas of life, both online and in real-time. Perhaps they work in the tech or gaming industry and identify as a “nerd” or “geek”. We help these individuals find the balance between intentionality and chaos, which may yield greater creative longevity. Perhaps they are the first in their families to embrace a creative career or lifestyle and are seeking additional support and spaces to hone their talents.
